While Dr. Tonks was at Auburn she served as the Student Director of Outreach for the College of Science and Mathematics. During one of her volunteer assignments, she shadowed an optometrist and developed an immediate interest in eye care. She learned how an optometrist treats not just eyes, but can work in conjunction with other physicians to promote the patient’s overall well-being.
“I quickly learned that several systemic conditions could affect the eye. You can sometimes see signs of autoimmune, neurological, vascular and thyroid-related problems in a simple eye exam. I like to think that we are a crucial part of a patient’s primary health care.”
After earning her Doctorate in Optometry, she did her Post-Graduate Residency at the Huntington, VA Medical Center where she concentrated in Ocular Disease with a secondary focus in Low Vision. She has a strong background in managing ocular-related medical conditions, such as, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts and other age-related diseases. Her background is particularly valuable to her patients and pre and post-operative care for Ophthalmologists Drs. Campbell, Cunningham, Taylor & Haun.
“I like empowering people about their health through education,” said Dr. Tonks. “I try to educate patients about their ocular health, what I am seeing and the steps they can take to lower their risk of eye problems in the future.”
Dr. Tonks understands the needs of patients throughout the East Tennessee area. She saw a wide range of patients while in Morristown, both from urban and rural areas, managing age-related eye diseases that are common to the area.
Dr. Tonks is thrilled to be part of Drs. Campbell, Cunningham, Taylor & Haun.
“At this practice, we are able to provide comprehensive eye care – from primary to surgical care all under one roof. That is a huge advantage. We have a retina specialist on staff and Ophthalmologists who provide surgical care for cataracts, eyelid disorders, refractive surgery, and numerous other eye conditions. We offer an optical center. We can take care of any patient’s needs—all right here at Drs. Campbell, Cunningham, Taylor & Haun.”
Dr. Tonks and her husband, Stephen reside in Knoxville. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, photography, and fly fishing with her father when he’s in town.
